Referring to a Dutch rebellion that happened in the 18th century, pachtersoproer was caused by the economic malais of the 1740's. Rural-tax collection combined with the lower-class's dissatisfaction at the way rich folk were abusing their powers culminated into an uprising. While little has been recorded about this act of rebellion there are a few facts we know for certain.
The riots began in the spring of 1748 in Friesland and Groningen.
Almost as an immediate reaction to the birth of William V, who would later on become the Prince of Orange. Those who had not sufficiently demonstrated their loyalty to the Orange regime were viciously attacked, tax-collects and landadel (great-men) were particularly targeted. On June 23rd the stadholder forbade gathering for fairs and and plays.
Amsterdam riots broke out on June 25th in the Bokermarkt. Angry people broke into the houses of lessees, a total of 36 houses were looted. Valuables were thrown into the water and a total of 3 people were killed and wounded. On June 28th, two men and a woman were to be hanged from the window of the Waag on the Dam. Shooting broke out from the direction of the Kalverstraat when the onlookers started to move forward, potentially trying to free the prisoners. Panic broke out and many people jumped into the Damrak (water) in an attempt to protect themselves. It is suspected that around 200 people were trampled or drowned. An eye-witness recalls seeing a man fitting the description of Johannes Van Der Haak, a murderer on the run. He was chased by soldiers but was able to get away in the confusion. It is suspected he was trampled to death but the body was never recovered.
The 3 executions were carried out as planned.
